New Approaches to Understanding Language in Autism: What Have We Learned and What is the Future?
Dr. Helen Tager-Flusberg

After more than four decades of research we have learned a great deal about language and communication in autism but there are still significant gaps in our knowledge.  In this talk I will summarize current research advances that address three questions:  1) how early do differences in language and communication emerge in autism? 2) how can we more effectively assess receptive and expressive language in individuals with autism? 3) why do almost one-third of children with autism fail to develop language and what are some new ideas about interventions that may help these children?  I will conclude with a plan for how we can continue to make progress, outlining how we could leverage technologies to support future research and developments on this important topic.
